Various Issues including Power Save Mode Firmware Design Issue
I’ll get right to the point with the problems I ran into with this monitor, then go into detail with my review. My first major issue with this monitor is a problem power save / standby mode. For most monitors I’ve seen on the market, if your computer goes to sleep, you disconnect the monitor’s cable, or your computer tries to put the monitor to sleep (using VESA DPM), the monitor will almost instantly go to sleep. Not this monitor! This monitor goes to full brightness, and displays a big warning message stating “No Cable The display will go into Power Save Mode in 5 minutes” which moves around the screen while also displaying a bar type timer. I wanted to use this in my office where I let my laptop go to sleep, or disconnect my laptop form the monitor to use at my conference table to give presentations. This message becomes extremely irksome. I can’t image using this in a living room or bedroom and running into this problem. The only way a warning message should show up on a monitor stating that no cable is detected is if no signal is detected when you first power on a monitor, or very briefly upon signal loss, and the monitor should stay at the current brightness settings. If a monitor loses an already existing signal, then it should go to sleep upon briefly signal loss. If you do a Google search for ‘dell 5 minutes power save’ you’ll see other people complaining about this issue with not only the U2515H, but also the U2715H, and U2414H. There are a couple people who state that this is even a firmware bug when using an HDMI cable, and doesn’t occur with the DisplayPort. This message is even more of an issue because manually powering on and off the monitor using the front touch sensitive capacitive power button is quite a chore with how non-responsive the buttons are.The second issue I have is with the capacitive buttons. They aren’t very responsive, and you’re often left waiting to determine whether or not the monitor detected you pressing a button. Since this monitor has no auto input switching, and no ambient light sensor, I often need to go into the menus to change the input and adjust the brightness according to the amount of daylight. The third issue I have is that there’s actually about 1/4“ around the internal screen that’s just black – the screen doesn’t go edge to edge (See photo). So, if you have a black or dark background near the edges, this makes it difficult when rearranging windows to quickly align windows with the edge of the screen since it’s hard to tell where the end of the internal screen is! Furthermore, if you’re thinking not having a bezel would allow you to seamlessly place this monitor side by side with another monitor, you aren’t gaining much since you will clearly still have quite a gap.The fourth issue I have is that the power LED isn’t solid in sleep mode. The power LED on the Asus version of this monitor glows solid amber in sleep. This monitor’s power LED fades in and out, or what Dell calls, breathes, in sleep mode. This gets very distracting if you are at your desk not using your computer while your monitor is in sleep mode. The fifth issue is that Dell doesn’t release firmware updates for this monitor for end users. Unlike other manufacturers, only do it in house. The last issue I had is with Dell technical support. When I responded to a thread that someone had started on the Dell support forums regarding the power save issue, Dell allowed my first post. When I posted some follow up information the following day, Dell ended up deleting both of my posts. Why else would they do this except to try to cover up this issue that they must’ve been clearly embarrassed about? I then tried Dell technical support chat several times, only to come up with a ‘page could not be found’ error message each time. It actually turned out that there’s a bug with entering a certain amount characters in the problem description field. After getting through that, I spoke with some moron that thought I needed a dispatch. Then when I carefully explained to her that all I needed was to get a firmware problem reported to engineering, she gave me the number for Dell Tech Concierge, which turned out to be a paid service!I think I should have gone with the Asus PB258Q. Apparently they use the same nice LG panel, but the Asus has physical buttons. Furthermore the Asus has a nice solid amber LED when the monitor is in standby mode, rather than the distracting white LED that fades in and out on the Dell that some over-enthusiastic engineer at Dell added. (You can disable the power LED when the monitor is powered on for both the Asus and Dell). So, for the remainder of my review:My requirements for a monitor were:1440P: For the monitor size I wanted, 25”, this resolution gave me the most screen real estate without having to worry about screen scaling and blurry text. The text on a 1080P 15.4” laptop monitor I had was slightly small for me, so I would need at least a 32” 4k monitor, which would be too large for my desk. I am near sited and sit fairly close to my monitor (within 24”), so 25” at 1440P is perfect. 27” would result in some loss of the clarity I like since the pixels density is less.Auto standby: believe it or not, some monitors don’t have any power save/auto standby capability, even thought that capability has been around for nearly 20 years! No distracting LEDs: Lots of monitors have power LED indicators that are super bright. In standby mode, some monitors have a bright blinking LED. There are lots of complaints about this out there as these can be really distracting.Clear pixel perfect text: Since I am near sited, everything up close is very sharp to me. So, any blurriness is very distracting as well. I’ve seen some cheap panels that produce fuzzy text (yep with digital input and using the screen’s native resolution). For this monitor:The actual display panel is great. There is definitely some IPS glow, but mostly if you have your brightness extremely high. To me it’s not the end of the world like the sleep issue is. I liked that fact that you could disable the power LED when the monitor is turned on. However, you cannot disable the sleep LED indicator. The sleep LED indicator slowly fades in and out. I ended up having to put a piece of tape over it. Unfortunately because of the power save issue, this doesn’t work out very well since I need some sort of indicator to know when the crappy capacitive buttons have responded to my touch. One good thing about this monitor is that when it’s connected to your PC, whether it’s soft powered off or not, your PC will still see it as connected so you don’t have to worry about your PC detecting it again when you power it on, or it comes out of standby.Note that the Dell U2515Hx is the same monitor, except branded for Amazon and includes an HDMI cable instead of a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. I also did not have any problem as some reviewers did with anything missing out of the box, or an invalid service tag. Just make sure you purchase this from a reputable Amazon marketplace seller (read the seller reviews).
