At 2560x1440 resolution, you are effectively getting twice the resolution of a standard 1080P HD screen. This monitor is basically a "2K" panel, or half of the effective resolution of a 4K screen. Because of this, you still get the noticeable increase in pixel density over a 1080P screen (especially at 25-inches), and while it's not quite as sharp as a 4K screen, you are putting significantly less load on your GPU when compared to a 4K screen. This allows 60+ FPS gaming on most modern titles at full 2560x1440 resolution, assuming your have a modern midrange graphics card (GTX 970, RX 480, GTX 1060 etc.) You couldn't hope to achieve such frame rates with a 4K screen, because you are driving twice the pixels. Response time for me was not an issue. I honestly don't notice a difference coming form a 2ms 60Hz TN panel to this 8ms 60Hz IPS panel. I don't due hyper competitive online gaming however.
The Windows side works great with this monitor right out of the box. Windows 8 and 10's built-in scaling automatically chose 125% which I decided to stick with. This upscales or "enlarges" elements of the UI to make viewing easier due to the increase in resolution (which can make things small). While you can use Windows 10 without scaling, I did find that text on certain website and in certain applications was a tad too small. 125% system-wide scaling seems perfect for this screen, as it enlarges the UI enough to make viewing comfortable, while still giving you a bit more room than 1080P to work with, all while maintaining perfect sharpness. NOTE: If you are having issues with Google Chrome scaling, goto Chrome properties and disable UI scaling for Chrome.
The Mac side of things is a little bit different. By default, Mac OS X (at the time of this writing, 10.11) only supports scaling for Apple-only displays. Because of this, you are basically stuck with full 2560x1440 resolution. Sure you can switch the resolution to 1920x1080, but this simply lowers the system resolution, causing everything to become blurry. My guess is, like me, you bought this monitor because you wanted a SHARP picture. While 2560x1440 res is useable, I find myself squinting to read text on certain webpages and in certain applications. I found a solution online that enables Mac users to trick OS X into supporting scaling for non Apple displays. Simply Google "high dpi for non apple display" and click on the Reddit post that appears. This should take you to the "tonymacx86" website where the process of getting this to work is described. It's a little bit technical unfortunately, but suffice it to say I was able to get OS X 10.11 to scale the U2515H to 1920x1080 resolution in HiDPI mode so that I don't loose the clarity of this 1440P display. While the UI is not quite as sharp as the Windows scaling, it's a massive improvement over running at standard 1920x1080 res. While I wish that some other resolution options were available for more space, the only two I could get to work were the native 2560x1440 res and 1920x1080 in HiDPI. Unfortunately us Mac users appear to be limited to these two options for the time being, until Apple decides that not everyone want's to spend $1,000 dollars on a Thunderbolt display. My MacBook's iGPU (Intel Iris 5100) does a good job of driving this display, but it occasionally lags an ever so slight amount when opening or minimizing windows when a lot of stuff is running. I run my MacBook to this screen, a 1600x900 20-inch secondary monitor, and the MacBooks built-in Retina screen at 2560x1600 all at the same time, so in my particular use case I am putting a fairly large pixel load on the iGPU. Your results may vary.
I love this monitor enough that I am saving my pennies to replace my old secondary Asus screen and grab another one of these. It is a very good buy, I highly recommend it!
Pros
- Least amount of backlight bleed I have ever seen on an IPS monitor. Not noticeable on anything but the darkest of darks and even than it is an extremely minor issue. You would have to view the panel from an awkward angle to really notice it. Although from what I have read this is a mixed bag usually. Some people complain about nasty backlight bleed, this could be luck of the draw or maybe they're not very familiar with the drawbacks of IPS panels, which you should be aware of going in. Regardless the one I have received is wonderful.
- Brightness. It's bright! I usually keep it at about half capacity. One of my pet peeves is having a low-brightness level and not being able to clearly see things when gaming etc.. This excels in that regard. Very Happy.
-Colors. The colors are amazing! Even right out of the box before calibration. I find the Multimedia preset to be the most pleasing, even better when you calibrate from there.
-The Stand. The stand is great on this thing. Solid construction and I love the adjustability. I would hate going back to a monitor with a non-adjustable stand after this.
-No noticeable ghosting or input lag. While admittedly I am not one that places a great emphasis on these sorts of things I have not had them hinder my gaming in anyway.
-Screen coating. I've heard people say that the screen coating is a bit of a mix between matte and glossy. It seems to be that way. It is definitely not as matte as my other monitors and is by no means a glossy one. With that being said I have not found any of the usual drawbacks from matte screens to be present. Such as that "sparkly" look when looking at whites and other light colors. It is also very crisp and clear while keeping those nasty reflections at bay.
-The menu settings. The menu itself is intuitive and easy to navigate. Not jumbled and confusing like other monitors. However the buttons themselves are another story.
Cons:
-Those touch buttons used to navigate the monitor options are awful. You really have to firmly and accurately press in the correct spot for it to register. Thankfully it's not too bad once you've gotten the hang of it and you can go into the settings to make it so it beeps when it has correctly been actuated so you know what you're doing.
- I wish the panels came with a glossy option but that's not really a con.
TLDR:
It's a great IPS Panel with colors that pop, a bright screen, great adjustability, and minimal backlight bleed (in my case)
I highly recommend it if you're interests call for an IPS monitor. I recommend this monitor if you are in the sub $500 price range.
Top reviews from other countries
The only complaints I have are for things I knew about already before I bought this screen and one thing I did not. They are:
- the "IPS glow" is quite noticeable on say a black loading screen of a game but once the game is loaded its beautiful. Look into this...might be a deal breaker depending on your use.
- I'd have preferred to get an IPS 144htz but too much $$$. Not a complaint but this monitor is only 60htz but the input lag is very low compared to other IPS types.
- the front power button. You do not need to push it but just a touch. Sometimes it is difficult to turn this screen on or off and you may have to pay extra attention to make sure you have your finger in the right place. Will not take for granted a simple mechanical button ever again :)
- the very edge of this screen (top, bottom, sides)does not get used. Yes I know it looks like it does but it does not. This was the only surprise in getting this monitor. This might have broken the deal for me had I known up front as I was expecting the whole screen to be used.
Not perfect but I love this monitor. Awesome having Windows at 2560x1440 as well as games. I dont notice a very big GPU hit going from 1080p to 1440p running a GTX1070.
Yo los he tenido.
Backlight Bleed assente, pannello uniforme.
Consiglio acquisto. Rapporto qualità prezzo ottimo
-- General --
Para juegos no he tenido mayor problema.
